people wanting birds...

people wanting birds...
So, I was looking through some classified ads the other day and I was shocked by the number of people offering to take in "unwanted" birds. This entire matter tends to anger me a bit. So, I answered some of these ads. I asked to see where the bird would live. About half of the people refused to allow me into their house for one silly excuse or another. Those that let me in were clearly not any type of home I would send any bird to. I am... for lack of a better term... a bird expert. These people are pretty practiced at sounding "bird smart" to the average person. Though they simply only spout the basic care sheet for each species. When confronted with real knowledge they get a bit hostile. What bothers me more, is that these people are essentially trying to get free or cheap birds. The kicker is that they pretend they can't afford to buy a bird, yet they have flat screen TV's ect... If you plan to rehome a bird, visit the place they will be living and feel free to contact me if you would like some help determining if that would be a good home for your bird. Your best bet though... keep your bird. If you are having issues with the bird contact me and I will give you the numbers of avian specialists for your bird species. People who can help you work through your bird troubles. It is true that those who cannot afford to buy a bird, generally cannot afford to care for the bird during it's lifetime. I don't want to see people offering to take in birds on this site unless they have 501c status. This should be the one place that we can all feel comfortable that we a surrounded by good/genuine rescues.

RE: people wanting birds...
I'm not an "expert" really, I was just looking at this post and it sounds really pompus Sad Sorry. I have kept birds for about 24 years, I even worked with birds at the zoo. I don't think anyone can ever really be an expert, but I am better versed in aviculture than the average bird owner I guess, though each day I find a dozen things I didn't know the day before... plus I have several people I call regularly to help me with things I am not familiar with. My humble apologies if the above post sounds awful Big Grin

I do have a question since my thread with this topic was deleted. Are the site rules posted containing this info (cuz I can't find any), or do you make it up as you go?

The site rules are not listed and that is my fault. I haven't gotten around to posting rules of what can/ can not be posted on the forums. However, at the end of the day we are animal lovers and want what's best for the animals. So, if we feel like there is a thread or post that isn't really what we are looking for on the site, well, then ...

But yes, you are right, we need to get the forum rules up here asap!

RE: people wanting birds...
I had to delete the post because of a reply posted on the thread. It was going to turn into an arguement and I felt it was necessary to avoid any additional conflict. You are welcome to repost that you will take in unwanted birds, and I will do my best to delete any hostile/ insulting posts in the future. I am aware that there are people on here willing to take in birds, and I do not have a problem with that, nor does the forum currently have any rules against it; however, as a bird lover I am sure you have seen countless ads of the type described above and I am certain you wouldn't want to send any of your babies to a private person you have never met and won't let you into there house. The fact that an arguement began to ensue on your thread reminded me of what I mentioned above, and the above post is not directed at you in any way. I have no fight with you, and i am certain if you were in my position and saw the fight beginning you would have erred on the side of caution as well. Perhaps not, I don't know but I had to make a decision and it was made. As I said before... feel free to repost and I will do my best to keep the peace here.

RE: people wanting birds...
I won't repost, if someone wants to be "nasty" towards me over that, then I'll let it be. There's nothing to be gained from it but an argument. Chopfar, you have my apologies for my earlier post.
