Potty Re-training?
I need some tips--
I was gone for almost four months and now that I'm home again, my one-year-old, Lola, is going in the house again. She doesn't like the rain and I think that is part of the problem but I don't know. Does anyone have any techniques on training an older dog? Our pups live inside but even the nine-week-old puppy we have is doing better than my Lola. Any ideas would be welcomed! -Lindsay |

RE: Potty Re-training?
I would make sure that feeding and watering is scheduled and bring her out every hour for the next week or so. When she goes outside give her lots of praise. It should help greatly. Be sure to clean area of accidents well to rid it of the scent. Also I have had success with using a crate while indoors until they have mastered potty training. Hope this helps

RE: Potty Re-training?
I agree,
Use a Crate. When you have a dog that you are working on house breaking you need to be able to control thier environment. If you are not physically watching them then they are in the kennel. Be sure to take them out at times when they would normally have to use the bathroom, such as after eating and after being in a kennel for a long period of time. I wouldnt go as far as every hour, but i suppose you can do that to if possible. If you take her out and she doesnt use the bathroom then you can just bring her back in but she will have to be supervised at all times so that you are there to correct or take outside the second she tries to go inside. If you allow her to run freely in your house even while you are there then she will simply venture into another room where you are not and she will know that it is safe to do so. She cant urinate in the house if you are in the same room watching her. If she does with you right there, then you need to reinforce basic obedience training. If she will only mess in the house while you are not there then you know that she has an understanding and knows that it is wrong to do so and knows that its only safe to do so while you are not around. By you taking her in and out and always watching her she will know that the only safe place to do her business is outside. After a short time the smells and feelings of the grass and other dogs smells will become a trigger in her brain as a time to use the restroom. Just my opinion based off of what has worked for me.

RE: Potty Re-training?
Well, If you buy a puppy, buy from a responsible breeder who has already started potty training. Crate or confine your puppy when you can't watch him always. Train other family members to do the same. If you feed your puppy a commercial dog food, feed dry food. It will keep his stools more solid. Confine your puppy to rooms with tile or other washable flooring so mistakes don't ruin carpets.
