Picking Up Strays
Ive always had a tendency of picking up stray dogs and trying to rehome them. Ive been lucky enough to find alot of them with collars and tags, however lots of them dont. I dont stop for near as many as I would like to due to safety reasons, such as heart worms or something else. I would hate to pick one up and pass something along to one of my dogs.
What do yall do in a situation when see a stray walking around ? Try and pick them up and help no matter what ? Pick and choose which ones to help ? Only if they look healthy and have a collar ? ![]() Greg Needham Foster Parent for The Great Pyrenees Rescue Society http://www.gprescuesociety.org |

RE: Picking Up Strays
Even as a kid, I would pick up any stray animal I found. If the animal appeared sick, however, I would take it directly to a nearby vet; and I have found that many will care for the stray under a "good samaritan" type charity. Many times, the animal has been so sick that they would have to euthanize, but I think it is worth it to give the animal a comfortable sleep, a good last meal, and an end to suffering. It's sad sometimes, but vets are usually happy to help if they can. I have't had to do that in a long time, but I would do it all again if te need arises. So far, the pets I've rescued recently have had at least some attention, I'm just keeping them out of the shelters and getting them medical attention that they need.

RE: Picking Up Strays
The worse condition they are in the more likely my mom is to pick them up. Well, she actually picks up any loose dog she sees.
When we pick up a dog we have him in the garage until we figure out what to do. My mom actually rescued two dogs today in the neighborhood with collars. The owner turned out to be in Korea and the person watching them apparently didn't watch them close enough and they dug out of the backyard. My mom took them to a boarding kennel in the area (the owner wanted this) and I believe she said he'll be back Friday.
