Hello,
I am currently trying to find homes for some puppies and mother blue heeler.
The mother is around 3 yrs old. My mother planned to take her in as a stray for awhile not realizing she was pregnant. When she had the puppies, an orginazation promised my mother that they would take them all in. She was never able to contact them again. Weve tried countless places and no one will help her. The puppies are now 7 months and it is becoming to costly for my mother to care for them. If you know someone who wants to take them in or an orginization that can help please contact us. These guys are extremely adorable and very loving. I would love to keep them but it is unfair to them.

Hello Friends,
Dental disease (especially periodontal disease) is the most common disease in our canine companions. It is also one of the most preventable and treatable diseases. Fortunately, we can reduce or even prevent dental disease by feeding a crunchy diet, appropriate chew treats and toys and daily tooth brushing. The following are steps to guide you on how to brush your dog's teeth:
1.The first step is to start with a clean, healthy mouth. Good dental
hygiene should start with a young pet with healthy new teeth and gums, or after your pet has had a professional dental cleaning.
2.You will need a soft-bristled tooth brush and veterinary toothpaste. Human toothpastes and baking soda may cause problems. Furthermore, veterinary toothpastes have flavors that are appealing to dogs. Anything other than a bristled tooth brush will not get below the gum line, which is the most important area to brush.
Thanks.

1. Exercise. All dogs need exercise every day, even the smallest breeds need to have a daily workout of their little legs. The larger a dog is, generally the more exercise it will need. There are working breeds, however, that are deceptively small but needs loads of exercise. When choosing a dog breed, do assess how much exercise it will need to make sure that you have the time and inclination to do it. You may be lucky enough to have a few acres of fenced land at your home that your dog can run around in but it is still important to take your dog on a walk regularly as there are several other benefits from the structured dog walk.
2. Bonding. A regular walk together with your 'best friend' will build and strengthen the bonds between you. Your dog is always exited and grateful to go out on a walk and will genuinely try to please you in order for the activity to be as regular as possible.
3. Training. The walk time is an ideal time to accomplish a number of basic obedience training tasks. Firstly, you are reinforcing your role as pack leader. Secondly, you have the opportunity when you are in a place where your dog can run free to train your dog in some basic commands, like 'come', 'sit' and, of course, 'fetch' This training will take the form of play for the dog and it will learn far easier than in the house.
4. Getting used to being on a lead or leash. All dogs need to be controllable and therefore all dogs should be trained to behave while on a lead or leash. This is valuable training even if you are fortunate lo live in an area where your dog can run free most of the time. There will come the day when your dog needs to visit a vet or you need to take your dog to the city and if it will not behave well on a lead, you will have problems.
5. Socialising. By being away from it's home territory, a dog is forced to learn some social skills around other people and other dogs. This is an important factor in preventing excessive aggression in your dog later on.
6. Avoiding doggie depression. Dogs that do not get a change in the environment frequently enough can become depressed. A depressed do can develop into an anxious dog and that can lead to behaviour problems. Regular walks, even if the follow a predictable path, will enliven your dog. It will be using all of it's senses to its fullest ability thus exercising its mind as well as its muscles.

1. Before you confirm your ticket, call or ask the airline company's policy about transport dog crates, and what's their policy regarding dog transportation. Most airline companies have different policies, and choose the right one for you, and your dog.
2. Walk your dog before the flight, make sure your dog does all her nature needs before the flight, even if the flight will not take more than 1 hour.
3. Make sure that the airport's and plane's staff know that you are with your dog, and that your dog is flying in the cargo compartment.
4. Before flying make sure your dog meets all the medical requirements for international flights.
5. Let the staff knows where is the water for your dog, while flying humans and other live organisms dehydrate faster than normally, so it is very important that your dog gets all the hydration she needs.
6. Before the take off, stay with your dog as long as possible, your dog will be stressed, if it's possible then stay with the dog till you go trough the gate.
7. There are many situations when the flights delay, that is not very good at all. As your dog should spend less time as possible in the airport and/or airplane. Before you go to the airport, call the airport and ask if there are any planned flight delays.
8.You should not feed your dog couple of hours before the flight, though, it should be better if you visit your vet regarding this, as your vet will know better about your dog's diet.
9. Try to avoid flights where you have to change the planes before you get to your desired location.
10. When the plane has landed, exit the plane as soon as possible, and go to the baggage waiting room, you should meet your dog as soon as possible, if she was flying in the cargo compartment.

He is loving, playful and the sweetest dog, but he does irrationally fear things. He needs to be socialized and get plenty of exercise. We live in MD now and will relocate out of state shortly. He is gold, white and brown, neutered and has all his updated shots.
Hey everyone. I actually saw this on CL and figured I would check it out. Seems that their are some wonderful people on here that really care about animals and there well being. I live in Mecklenburg county which is almost into NC. I have (don't faint) 11 dogs. They consist of 5 chihuahua's, 2 cocker spaniels, Australian Shepard, Pit Mix(who is a big baby lol), sheir-pa(spelling) mix, and well.....just a mix. My partner and I(and of course the kids) have a soft spot for animals. The Australian Shepard, Mix were found on the side of the road and I could not leave them there. The Sher-pa(spelling again) was 8 weeks old and left on a back porch in 90 degree whether for over a week.....so we added another to the house. The pit had parvo when we got her and at 8 weeks old she could still fit in the palm of your hand. We nursed her back to health which really surprised me she pulled through, and she has acted like a Chihuahua since, seeing as how he grew up with them. And chihuahua's have a special place in my heart, what more can I say. We also just rescued 4 turtles today that someone decided they just didn't want anymore. Of course I am trying to find someone to donate a 55 gallon aquarium because my three small ones will do for now, but not long. Other than that, not much to tell.

I recently got in a rather heated discussion on the Pet
section of Criags List. Some asked about a possible overview group for rescues,of course their is none. I answered that rescues were sometimes difficult to work with, staff size, location. hours, etc. and related a couple of my experiences. Well ofcourse I was attacked. This led me saying something about animals in crates and I was ferosciously attacked. I was informed that rescues did not put their animals in crates they were ALL in foster homes. I couldn't believe that wrote that, but I decided to check it out.

Anyone on here please tell me approximately what percent of your animals you have in foster homes, I know you wish it could be 100%, but the ugly reality raises it's head. So just for my knowledge I would like to know about what percent are
in foster homes. I know some are 100% in fosters and they only take in animals that they have room in the foster homes to take care of.

I'm not a foster but I do have 11 rescues and 9 of my own acquired dogs, thankgoodness they are all small dogs and I have an excess permit from the city and nice neighbors.\

Any information would be greatly appreciated, even if you prove me wrong and all rescues ARE 100% in foster home.

Incident Date: Friday, Feb 12, 2010
County: Trumbull

Disposition: Alleged

Alleged: Kathy Witzman

More than 100 dogs, two horses, and dozens of ducks chickens and cats roam Kathy Witzman's property on State Route 87 in Gustavus township.

Witzman runs what she calls the Humane Sanctuary, but over the years, officials with the Animal Welfare League of Trumbull County said it grew out of control.

"I'm sure that initially her desire was to help animals, but it just got out of hand," said Detective Harold Firster, Trumbull County Sheriff's office.

After an investigation and two weeks of planning, 30 volunteers, including five veterinarians, began a rescue operation early Friday, which continued for most of the day. Sheriff's deputies arrested Witzman on animal cruelty charges and transported her 97-year-old mother to Trumbull Memorial Hospital.

Sheriff's deputies and fire crews said the house is deplorable and its conditions are some of the worst they've seen.

"The dog feces had caked the floor almost like a carpet," Firster said, "and the smell of ammonia was so pungent that it was very difficult getting the 97-year-old mother out of the house."

Officials said some of the animals are visibly suffering from skin disease and mange, while several week-old puppies are clinging to life after they were hidden in a barn.

"Others, when you look at them you can tell they're malnourished," said Barbara Busko, Animal Welfare League.

Witzman was previously charged with open burning back in 2007, after she allegedly burned several dead animals.

horse vaccines, wormers, and farrier care...

Well folks, it's that time of year...
I found myself today looking through two catalouges that came in the mail. The first was a Garden/Nursery so I started planning my garden. The second was the KV Equine spring issue. I flipped to the back and started figuring out my vaccines for the horses. In Nebraska I vaccinate for the following... Rabbies, Strangles (streptococcus equi), Equine herpes EHV-1 and EHV-4 (both forms of the rhinopneumonitis virus), Equine influenza due to type A2 viruses (incuding Kentucky 97), West Nile, Equine Encephalomyelitis (eastern, western, and venezuelan) and Tetanus. Grand total... $198 dollars for all three horses combined.

This got me thinking (of course) many people I know skip rabbies, tetanus, Strangles, and west nile. (at least in my area). They look at horses a lot like cattle and only vaccinate against the basics. In fact, in a 7 mile radius I don't know anyone who vaccinates for these except me.

Additionally, most people in this area don't vaccinate their horses until close to June... Horses must be vaccinated BEFORE the insects appear. I vaccinate around the end of March.

So, I thought I would share a bit... If you are unsure on which vaccines to give to your horse, contact your local universities ag department or your vet. err on the safe side. The rabbies vaccine is given three times one dose every three weeks until all three are complete... and then one booster shot anually. A 15 dollar vial will treat three horses AND I have a dose left over to use on a dog or cat. I don't think it's worth NOT doing. I can't imagine going outside and finding a horse dying because I was too cheap to add $5 a horse for a rabbies vaccine. Strangles... is HIGHLY contageous. I live accross the road from the most popular horse back riding trail in the state... One of my horse pastures borders the trail, so I spend the $11.95 per horse for the Strangles vaccine and in the process protect my babies, and earn myself a bit of peace of mind. Tetanus... wow not to give this one would just be silly. Horses live inside barns, and while I do my best, all it takes is a simple cut on a horse to get infected with Tetanus. This one seems like a no-brainer . Now, west nile. In the past 3 years 5 horses within a mile radius of my house have DIED of west nile. Again... not optional.

Additionally, horses should be wormed YEAR ROUND, on a ROTATING schedule of wormers. (Read the ingredients) Ivermectin is sold under several names, so is Fembendazole, and most of the other major equine wormers. I worm my horses every 6 weeks all year round.

My husband and I were talking today, and we discussed that horses are expensive and extremely labor intensive. You really have to LOVE horses to care for them properly.

Additionally, our farrier visits every 4 weeks during the warmer months, and 2 times over the winter (when I think it's necessary). I don't trim my own horses because I have NEVER known a horse owner that could do this without at least occasionally causing bruising due to uneven trims (sometimes the bruising is almost impossible to see). If you are lucky and don't have a big feathered draft horse like I do, then trimmings are best at every 6 weeks. Our farrier charges $30 for each of our "light" horses, and $40 for our draft horse, and I am lucky not to need shoes on my horses most of the time.

All three horses are coggins tested every 6 months. ($25 per horse), and I have to TAKE them to the vet for this price.

I do stronly feel that if a person cannot afford vaccinations, farrier care, dental care, and year round wormings then they have too many horses. I just wanted to share, since I was adding up my annual horse care costs today.
$4110 a year, this includes... feed, farrier care, dental, coggins, vaccines, and wormers. (God forbid we would have a medical emergency).

Just food for thought I guess...

By BEN WALKER, AP National Writer Ben Walker, Ap National Writer – 1 hr 12 mins ago
NEW YORK – Sadie the Scottish terrier won America's top dog show Tuesday night, and that was pretty predictable. What happened moments before she took the title at Westminster was far more startling.

Two members of People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals walked into the center ring at Madison Square Garden and held up signs that said "Mutts Rule" and "Breeders Kill Shelter Dogs' Chances," the latter a slogan popularized by PETA.

The crowd of 15,000 gasped at the protest, then booed the well-dressed women and cheered as security ushered them away without incident. The women, who acted on their own but were supported by PETA, were charged with criminal trespass, police said.

The interruption occurred between judging of a Doberman pinscher and brittany and lasted about a minute. Shortly thereafter, 4-year-old Sadie climbed the purple best in show podium where one of the women had stood.

"I thought it was well-controlled by our people," Westminster spokesman David Frei said, without elaborating. Frei, the host of USA Network's coverage, is a veteran of the show world and a longtime advocate of therapy and rescue dogs.

Sadie was a big favorite coming into the show, which is for 2,500 purebred dogs. There have been previous protests at Westminster, but none nearly so dramatic. As a matter of course, the public-address announcer at the Garden reads an announcement urging people to visit shelters and adopt their dogs.

PETA contends the focus on purebreds leaves many mutts homeless. In a statement, PETA vice president Daphna Nachminovitch said "euthanasia becomes a sad necessity."

Sadie came to New York as America's No. 1 show dog and earned her 112th best in show ribbon.

"She was perfect," handler Gabriel Rangel said. "I couldn't ask for anything more."

Also reaching the final ring were a brittany that recently had two litters, a whippet that can run 35 mph, a Doberman pinscher headed into retirement, a white toy poodle who overcame his anxiety around crowds, a Canadian-bred French bulldog and a puli that twice won the herding group.

Her tongue out and her tail wagging, Sadie was right in step with Rangel. She is owned by Amelia Musser of Mackinac Island, Mich., and sports the champion's name of Roundtown Mercedes of Maryscot.

Rangel kidded that his relationship with Sadie was like a marriage. "I'm happily married," he said, "as long as I say, 'Yes, honey.'"

Sadie became the eighth Scottie to win at Westminster, second most to the 13 wins by wire fox terriers. She was the record 45th terrier to win in a show that began in 1877.

Judge Elliott Weiss picked the winner. He'd already seen Sadie — he chose her as the winner of an event in North Carolina last September.

Sadie became the first Triple Crown winner of dogdom. She took the National Dog Show in suburban Philadelphia in November and the AKC/Eukanuba National Championship in California in December.

This was Sadie's third try at Westminster. She got spooked by strange sounds at the Garden two years ago, and last February had a potty accident on the Garden's green carpet.

Garden fans cheer loudly for big dogs, and thundering mastiffs got a great reception. There was a murmur, too, when a sweet golden retriever got passed over by a judge. Retrievers always rank among the most popular dogs in the U.S., but have never won Westminster.

A Glen of Imaal terrier drew a laugh when she stopped her parade to scarf up loose treats off the carpet. She was a show girl — it figures, because handler Bruce Sussman co-wrote "Copacabana" with Barry Manilow.

Among the notables at ringside were Broadway star Bernadette Peters and a top official from baseball's big dogs, New York Yankees president Randy Levine.

Dogs from 173 breeds and varieties entered this show. Westminster will welcome six more breeds next year, including the bluetick coonhound, best known to sports fans as the Smokey mascot at the University of Tennessee.

"She was there for me all the way," Rangel said after easily winning the terrier group. Within a half-hour, he and Sadie had captured an even bigger trophy.

Maybe she was in a hurry to get home.

"She likes to watch TV," Rangel said. "We have dinner together at the hotel and watch Animal Planet."

As rescuers/adopters/animal lovers, we each probably have a story of our personal pet peeves with a particular type of animal. Here's what I mean... It irritates me that people often adopt pit bulls because they want a "tough" looking dog. It also irritates me that people think cats can take care of themselves outdoors and find their own food. I often find myself irritated by the same things over and over with animal owners, and sometimes potential adopters. Have you ever been asked a question or told something that just made you grind your teeth? I had someone tell me that they were going to get horses (yet these same people don't have running water or functioning heat in their home) and I thought to myself "you can't take care of yourselves!". I am also irritated by the number of rabbits in petstores during Easter. Impulse purchases account for a huge quantity of rescue animals later on. If they don't understand how to care for a bunny properly (and yes it's more complicated than they think) why on earth would they purchase one for a child at Easter? The newness wears off, and then a bunny sits "free to good home" on craigslist, or worse starves to death outside. If you want to get a bunny, visit the House Rabbit Societies website and read first. It's really the only "kind" way to keep a rabbit. I'd love to hear what irrritates you, and/or what rediculous things you've seen or heard. As you post, I will add some of my more funny animal rescue experiences. (these stories are always good for a laugh after the fact). But you first...

Oh, and here is our house bunny Ben...
